Below are a few Red Hook shops we checked out recently, but there are other boutiques worth shopping on the same block, like Red Lipstick and Erie Basin.?Many are only open toward the end of the week, Thursdays through Sundays, so plan accordingly.

Beautifully wrapped and scented Saipua soaps are available at many fine shops around town (GRDN, Feliz Brooklyn), but at their tiny Red Hook store you can also find their brand-new soy wax candles in aromatherapeutic combinations like Wisteria & Lilac. This Sunday (Dec. 12) from 10am to 6pm they’re hosting a Holiday Bazaar with snacks, champers, and goods like hand-blown glass ornaments and handmade wreaths (above).

Designer Anne O’Neill’s Archibald Leach shirt dresses–made from new and old men’s shirts–are unique and pretty one-size-fits-all, so you don’t have to know your girlfriend’s exact size to find her one that’s flattering. To dress up the dress, or gift a guy, Anne also embellishes vintage ties with initials and symbols. And if you have a niece in some sunnier locale, then the halter tops by Fang, made from old kids sheets, will bring those memories of E.T. and Kermie rushing back.

For original, cheeky holiday cards, stop in Jane Buck’s shop. And if there is a newborn, toddler or expectant mom on your list, she offers a veritable zoo of cute, bold animals on prints and onesies. She’s one of the local artists featured in our recent post on Art for Kid’s Rooms.
Denise Carbonell’s store is filled with handcrafted jewelry, housewares and oddities. She and her partner Derek Dominy collaborate on a line of mesh jewelry that would be perfect for a significant someone. The unisex rings ($65) look sexy on a man’s hands, and the bracelets, lariats and earrings make a gorgeous gift for the woman who is usually too difficult to jewelry shop for.
