Where to Get Your Gobble Gobble

It’s the most turkey-full time of the year. Whether you’re staying in town to host your own, or want that bird delivered to your door, we’ve got the scoop on where to get your Thanksgiving centerpiece this year. Here are some of our favorite local farms and butcher shops that are now taking big orders of bird. You can find pastured turkeys at all of them, and we’re giving thanks this year that a few farms are still raising unique heritage breeds, to keep even more turkey traditions alive.

Quattro Game Farm
Carmella Quattrociocchi continues the tradition of raising free-range, antibiotic and hormone free fowl and venison on the farm that her mother established in 1944. Its pastures boast the only Eastern Breed Wild Turkeys in the state, and other turkey breeds available to purchase include Heritage Bourbon Red and White Holland. Carmella hopes to pass the torch on to her two children, who grew up on the farm.?Where: Union Square Greenmarket, or by contacting the farm at 845-635-2018?When: Now until sold out, to pick up Nov. 20th or 24th at Union Square Greenmarket?Pricing: $3.99-$8.59/lb, depending on variety

Hoosic River Poultry
Right on the border of Vermont, this Upstate New York farm specializes in poultry — pasture-raised chicken, turkey, duck and plenty of eggs. Farmer Craig Acton has been working at Greenmarkets for different farms since 1985, and began his own livestock operation about 7 years ago. “I work for the animals. It’s a lifestyle, you either enjoy it or you don’t,” he says. Hoosic is in the process of raising a heritage turkey breed, Naragansett, but they won’t be ready until next year. For now, order their pasture-raised white broad breasted turkeys through the Greenmarket. Violet Hill Farms
A livestock farm that’s been supplying plenty of NYC restaurants with whole hogs, Violet Hill is offering their pasture-raised broad breasted turkeys straight to the consumer through the Greenmarket, too. Says restauranteur Jimmy Carbone of its farmer, Paul Dench-Layton: “[He] raises animals of pure flavor — the best pigs, guinea hens, belle rouge chickens. But he is a working, small farmer who has to make his living from raising livestock.” Take orders now to pick up Nov. 20th or Nov. 24th at Union Square Greenmarket, and chat up farmer while you’re at it, too. Norwick Meadow Farms
Want to go organic turkey this year? This farm has certified-organic pasture-raised great white double-breasted turkeys to spare. It’s farmer Zaid Kurdieh’s second year raising these big birds, by popular demand, and he notes the not-so-small differences in their behavior from chickens: “Raising turkeys in general is kind of difficult, because they’re a little stupid. We had to get them out of the creek the other day when they were grazing because they hopped the electric fence.” Where: Union Square, Tompkins Square, Tucker Square or 92nd Street Greenmarket or by contacting the farm: (607) 336-7598 or www.norwichmeadowsfarm.com When: Now until sold out, to pick up Nov. 22th or 24th at Union Square Greenmarket?Pricing: $6/lb

All their animals are pastured on their Upstate New York land, and the great white double breasted turkeys they’re offering this year are no exception.
