Find inspiration for your own running routine at the New York City Marathon. Now in its fortieth year, the classic New York event includes thousands and runners and millions of spectators – so it’s worth doing some pre-race training yourself before braving the crowds. Luckily for us, it’s much easier to find a spot along the race route in Brooklyn than it is in Manhattan – the marathon enters Brooklyn at the Verrazano Bridge and traverses the borough from south to north, passing through Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Park Slope, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint on its way to Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx. The marathon organizers highlight the intersection of Flatbush and Lafayette near BAM as a particularly good place to catch the marathoners; if you’d prefer the safety and comfort of watching the race through a bar’s windows, Pacific Standard will be opening at 9am to celebrate the marathon with cheap Marathon Marys and a barbecue station. As always, along the marathon route, all sorts of bands will be performing, from hip-hop and soul to rock and metal, adding to a carnivalesque atmosphere.
