Should Bodegas Be Armed?

One advocacy group is promoting gun ownership among bodega workers but arab workers are divided over its benefits, reports New America Media.

With 15 murders in the last 20 months in Crown Heights, Mohammed Koko of the local bodega is in favor of more guns. According to the report, Koko supports the advocacy group Hispanics Across America (HAA) that has been handing out gun?license?paperwork to many bodegas throughout the city. The group started in October and plans to reach 14,000 New York bodegas, saying that these people are “sitting ducks” for violence, according to the report.

Other bodega workers do not think that more guns will solve their problems. In this group are people who have been recent victims of crime. Mohammed Al Saedi, owner of Al Saedi deli in Sunset Park, who was recently robbed says, “A robber who wants to shoot you probably won’t even give you a chance to react,” according to the report. ?Walid, who works at a deli on 5th Ave. near 36th Street, think guns may be misused when people “get mad or frustrated,” the report says.

In the meantime, Mayor Bloomberg has recently proposed lowering the price of a gun permit from $340 to between $25 and $110, New America Media reports.
