DUMBO, WILLIAMSBURG AND GREENPOINT If just going to see the new Harry Potter isn’t enough to sate your Hogwarts hunger, there are a number of Brooklyn events this week that go way beyond the midnight showing. On Thursday, Galapagos is hosting a pre-screening party with entertainment and butter beer. The arts-friendly venue tackles Potter from a highbrow perspective, holding a “Harry Potter in critical context” lecture that brings all those dusty texts from undergrad to bear on the boy wizard, as well as Shakespearean-trained actors reading excerpts from the books—and it all ends in time to catch the midnight showing. Then, on Saturday, the Music Hall of Williamsburg is hosting the NYC Wizard Rock Festival, a daylong celebration featuring fifteen Potter-inspired rockers, including headliners Ministry of Magic. If your love of fantasy is a bit more old-school, on Monday night WORD offers up Doritos, Mountain Dew, and some dyed-in-the-wool nerd chroniclers at their event Of Wizards and Wookiees: A Panel Discussion on Fandom and Gaming, featuring Ethan Gilsdorf, author of Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks, and Tony Pacitti, author of My Best Friend is a Wookiee.
