Waiver to Appoint Black Requested

On Wednesday, Mayor Bloomberg formally asked the state Education Commissioner for a waiver to appoint Cathleen Black as chancellor of New York’s 1,600 schools to replace Joel Klein, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Commissioner Steiner must now decide whether or not to accept the mayor’s recommendation. An advisory panel will be convened to make recommendations, but Steiner is not bound by them.

Black was named Klein’s successor a week ago by Mayor Bloomberg, amid controversy that Black lacked any experience in education.
